Which name: Basilicata or Lucania?

Even if the political-administrative name of the region is Basilicata, who was born there prefer to call it Lucania. The ancient name permets the use of the adjective lucano and the recognition in an identity that, even if it is placed in a remote past, it sinks its roots in events that have historically characterized in a social, cultural, economic and religious central position and homogeneity, that collective memories recognize, either right or wrong, like originating characteristics of its people: the lucana gens, the oldest Italic people of Sannitica  extraction which spoke the Oscan-Umbrian language and is territory goes from the Campania coast, in the province of Salerno, to the Calabrian lands in the province of Cosenza and parts of Puglia.

Lucania, the oldest and never forgetten name, has different philological roots. One of these is leucos, originally a Greek word that had kept the same Latin meaning: white, bright. But also in the ancient Sanskrit language the word luc means light and brilliance, and the same meaning is present in the Semite word luachan. Without doubt white and bright were the wide tears' clearing and the calanchi's summit,  composed by calcareous and clayey grounds. The opened between the dense forest's undergrowth that covered the whole region, and as wood in Latin language is lucus, it's very probable that also this noun contributed to give to the region its ancient name. Then, this name became official during the Roma's Imperial period like III Augustan region of the Roman Empire. Lucania: region, so, light-dark, shade and romantic, marked at intervals by light's clearnings. 

About the origin of the name Basilicata somebody affirms that this word derives from basilikòs, that perhaps was<the name of Byzantine official that governed the region. This thesis, put forward by Racioppi (intellectual, writer and political man of '800) was then supported by others people thanks to the authoritativeness of the author. But, in the light others contributions, it seems that there weren't Byzantine official called Basilici.

The Basilici were instead the books of Bisanzio's legislation collected in the IX century. The place-name Basilicata, land of Basileus, that is king's land, was born to indicate this part of our territory that was subject to the Byzantine supremacy and that was distinguished from the Lucania (in origin that was the name of the region); in fact in this period the land of the gastaldato of Longobards of Salerno. In the recent history, from 1932 until the Costitution of the 1948, the region was called still Lucania but, in 1948, it was called Basilicata.©Copyright Lucaniaonline  

 Quale nome: Basilicata o Lucania ? 

  Anche se il nome politico-amministrativo della regione è Basilicata, chi vi nasce preferisce  chiamarla Lucania. L'antico nome permette l'utilizzo dell'aggettivo lucano e il riconoscimento in un'identità che, seppure collocata in un lontano passato, affonda le sue radici in eventi che si sono storicamente caratterizzati in una centralità ed omogeneità sociale, culturale, economica e religiosa  che la memoria collettiva riconosce, a torto o a ragione, come tratti originari del proprio popolo: la gens lucana, l'antico popolo italico di stirpe sannitica che parlava l'osco-umbro  e il cui territorio spaziava dalle coste della Campania in provincia di Salerno fino alle terre calabre del cosentino e  parti della Puglia.      

       Lucania, l'antico e mai dimenticato nome, ha diverse radici filologiche. Una di queste è data da leucos, originariamente parola greca che aveva conservato nella sua accezione latina lo stesso significato: bianco, lucente. Ma anche nell'antica lingua sanscrita la parola luc ha significato di luce e luminosità, e lo stesso significato lo si ritrova nella parola sémita di luachan. Senz'altro bianchi e lucenti erano gli ampi squarci delle radure e i picchi dei calanchi, composti da terre calcaree ed argillose, che si aprivano tra le fitte macchie di foreste che coprivano l'intera regione, e poiché bosco in latino si traduce in lucus, è molto verosimile che anche questo nome abbia contribuito a dare alla regione il suo antico nome, ufficializzato, poi, nel periodo della Roma imperiale quale III regione augustea dell'Impero. Lucania: regione, dunque, chiaro-scura, ombrosa e romantica, segnata a tratti da squarci di luce.

        Circa l'origine del nome di Basilicata vi è chi lo fa derivare da basilikòs, che sembra sia stato il nome del funzionario bizantino che governava la regione. Questa tesi, avanzata inizialmente dal Racioppi (intellettuale, scrittore e politico dell'800) fu poi sostenuta nel corso del tempo anche a causa dell'autorevolezza dell'autore. Ma alla luce di altri contributi sembra che non siano mai esistiti funzionari bizantini chiamati Basilici. 

I Basilici erano invece i libri della legislazione di Bisanzio raccolti nel IX sec. . Il toponimo Basilicata, terra del Basileus, cioè del re, nacque per indicare quella parte del nostro territorio  soggetta al dominio bizantino e che andava distinta dalla Lucania (così si chiamava all'origine la regione), che  all'epoca riguardava la terra del gastaldato dei Longobardi di Salerno. Nella storia recente, dal 1932 fino alla Costituzione del 1948, la regione si chiamò ancora Lucania ma poi, dal 1948, prese l'attuale nome.              ©Copyright Lucaniaonline
